Mathematics

At Spetisbury Primary School we use a Teaching for Mastery approach to support learning of mathematics based upon the NCETM model of Teaching for Mastery which has been developed through research into high performing education systems internationally, particularly those of east and south-east Asian countries such as Singapore, Japan, South Korea and China.

We use the White Rose Mathematics Scheme to support the overall structure of our curriculum which we complement with resources from the NCETM, in particular the Ready to Progress Materials which we are using to ensure that no child is left behind, following the last two years of the pandemic.

Mastery in mathematics is:

• Achievable for all

• Deep and sustainable learning

• The ability to build on something that has already been sufficiently mastered

• The ability to reason about a concept and make connections

• Conceptual and procedural fluency
