Music

At Spetisbury Primary, we aim to deliver a high-quality music curriculum which inspires and enriches pupils to fulfil their musical potential. This begins at their first exploration of sounds at a young age and develops through singing, playing, listening and composing. We want our children to develop a lifelong appreciation for a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from a range of different cultures. We believe all children deserve to be given the chance to explore and compose music from a rich variety of cultures.

Music lessons are delivered by class teachers and are complemented by teachers from the Dorset Music service or specialist teachers. As the children progress through school, they are given the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of musical concepts by playing the following instruments:

EYFS – classroom percussion
Key Stage 1 – untuned and tuned percussion
Year 3 – Tuned percussion and recorders
Year 4 – Instruments through the Dorset Music Service
Year 5 – Tuned percussion and recorders
Year 6 – Tuned percussion and recorders

In addition to our curriculum, we have whole school shows for the children to showcase their learning and year 6 performs a musical as their final primary performance.

There are a number of musical clubs, we run a choir (Mondays) and a guitar club (Mondays). These groups rehearse weekly and have performed in school and on local stages. Children can also take peripatetic lessons for guitar, violin, piano and recorder.
